JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN AFFAIRS (Sub-Committee on European Scrutiny) díospóireacht -
Thursday, 16 Oct 2003

Vol. 1 No. 44

Business of Sub-Committee.

The minutes of the meeting of 2 October 2003 have been circulated. Are they agreed? Agreed. I propose to defer consideration of the 19th report and the part 2 of the 20th report until the next meeting of the sub-committee.

The final item is correspondence from the Department of Transport which apparently has not been circulated to members. It deals with a matter just raised by Deputy Sexton. The letter is from Mr. McKay, principal officer in the aviation regulation and international relations division of the Department of Transport, who wrote to provide an explanation for the fact that formal scrutiny notes in respect of two items within his area of responsibility were not provided to the sub-committee within the prescribed time. They have not yet been adopted. The note on this proposal was submitted to the sub-committee in October. The letter states that it was not clear whether the matter was proper to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment or the Department of Transport and that the issue was the subject of interdepartmental review. It further states that the Department of Transport has recently accepted responsibility for the proposal and that a scrutiny note was immediately prepared and submitted. I understand from the letter that working groups in Brussels have only just begun to examine this proposal. It is proposed to note the correspondence, which will be circulated. Is that agreed? Agreed.

That concludes our business.

The sub-committee adjourned at 10.10 a.m. until 9.30 a.m. on Thursday, 30 October 2003.
