JOINT COMMITTEE ON FINANCE AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 11 Jun 2003

Vol. 1 No. 10

Business of Joint Committee.

Is there any other business? Another Bill relevant to the committee is the NESC development office Bill 2002. It has not yet been referred to the committee, but we expect it will be shortly and are expected to complete Committee Stage before the summer recess. I remind members of the select committee we will meet tomorrow at 11.15 a.m. in committee room 4 to discuss the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission Bill. I understand the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Parlon, will take the Bill. I anticipate the debate will last for several hours. If possible, we should dispose of Committee Stage tomorrow because we will be dealing with the Estimates throughout next week.

If the Dáil sits on Friday and Committee Stage of the Bill is not completed tomorrow, which I fervently hope will not be the case, I suggest we meet early on Friday to continue our deliberations. I presume members, particularly of the Government parties, will be present in the Houses on Friday at any rate, although there are no arranged votes on Friday.

We will discuss this matter tomorrow. It would suit all members of the committee if we were able to dispose of Committee Stage tomorrow evening because many members tend not to be present on Fridays.

In relation to some of the items with which Deputy Finneran was anxious to deal, if we met early on Friday mornings for the final three weeks of the session, we could dispose of a fair amount of work, particularly if the Dáil sits on the Fridays.

When we meet tomorrow morning, we will try to agree a timetable. I prefer not to discuss the matter now.

The joint committee adjourned at 4.55 p.m.
