JOINT COMMITTEE ON FINANCE AND THE PUBLIC SERVICE díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 19 Oct 2005

Business of Joint Committee.

The draft minutes of the last meeting have been deferred and will be circulated when available. The next item on the agenda is correspondence. A very short schedule of routine items has been issued. The first document is an invitation to the Industry and Parliament Trust introducing the Westminster workshop and a copy of its newsletter. Essentially, it is not appropriate to this committee. It is aimed at junior to middle management personnel within the system. Is it agreed that it be noted? Agreed.

The next item is a letter to the Chairman from the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs with responsibility for European Affairs regarding scrutiny of EU legislation. I suggest we note it. It has been issued to all the committees and priority will be given to our EU scrutiny and documents proposal forwarded by the Sub-Committee on EU Scrutiny. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The next item is an e-mail to the secretariat from the first director of the Small Firms Association registering a formal complaint about the administration of the 1994-99 CSF programme from the European Union. It is more appropriate to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment as the European Court of Auditors could be involved. We could ask the European Commission to forward a copy of its reply to the Small Firms Association to the committee. I suggest we ask the Commission for a reply and then deliberate on the matter. I do not think we should delve into it straightaway here. When we have more information, we may refer the matter to another committee. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The next item is a letter to the clerk from the change management and training unit, Department of the Taoiseach, enclosing a copy of the Department's scheme under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. Copies are available to members on request. I suggest we note the letter. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The next item is Action on Poverty Today from the Combat Poverty Agency, Autumn 2005 newsletter. We note the document, a copy of which is available on request to members. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The final item is anonymous correspondence forwarded to the committee enclosing a cutting from the Irish Independent on the tax status of Dún Laoghaire Golf Club. I do not know whether I want to note anonymous correspondence. We would normally note correspondence but I propose we disregard anonymous correspondence.

I second that proposal.
