Business of Joint Committee

Good morning and welcome to the 19th meeting of this committee. Apologies have been received from Deputies Buckley and Mitchell and Senator O'Sullivan. The Chair has asked me to sit in her place. I remind members that they must be physically present within Leinster House to take part in public meetings of the committee. I will not allow a member to take part in this meeting if they are not in Leinster House. The evidence of witnesses physically present in Leinster House is protected by absolute privilege, but they should not criticise or make charges against any person or entity by name or in such a way as to make him, her or it identifiable. They should not engage in speech that might be regarded as damaging to the good name of the person or entity.

The Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Jerry Buttimer, the Leader of Seanad Éireann, Senator Lisa Chambers and the Seanad Committee on Parliamentary Privileges and Oversight have agreed that our next meeting may be held in the Seanad Chamber. The meeting will be titled, "Give Travellers the Floor". The meeting will have two sessions - from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. In each session will be ten speakers from the Traveller community. Speakers will have six minutes to speak. In each session we will have one hour for members to ask questions, make comments and take part in the debate. Is that agreed? Agreed. I look forward to seeing all of them next week.
