Vol. 1 No. 36

PUBLIC SAFETY (EMERGENCY POWERS) BILL, 1923. - LAND BILL.—MOTION FOR WITHDRAWAL.

I beg leave of the Seanad to introduce the following resolution:—

"That in view of the unanimous approval by the Seanad of certain sections of the Land Bill, 1923, and the almost unanimous disapproval of certain other sections, and having regard to the short time left at the disposal of the Seanad for proper consideration of this important measure, the Seanad requests the Government to withdraw the Bill until after the General Election, or, in the alternative to introduce an agreed measure which will meet the necessities of the immediate future."

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Are you asking that the ordinary business be suspended for the purpose of letting this resolution be discussed under Standing Order 14?

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Have you got the support of the requisite number of Senators?

I hope to.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Those supporting Senator Counihan, just stand in their places. I make it out that nine only are standing. You will require the support of ten, and I do not think you can support the motion yourself. I think the Standing Order means excluding the Senator who proposes a motion. I cannot allow the resolution to be discussed.
