Vol. 5 No. 10

BUSINESS OF THE SEANAD.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Since I mentioned yesterday that it would be perhaps more desirable under the circumstances to meet on Thursday of next week, I have been discussing the matter with Senator Douglas, and in view of the amount of business that has to be disposed of before the House rises for the Recess, I have come to the conclusion that it will be much wiser for the Seanad if they agree to meet on Tuesday. That will enable us to get rid of a good deal of pressing matter and will leave Thursday free for the nominations and probably for the Finance Bill, which may have reached us by that time. I know there has been extraordinary unanimity among the Deputies of the Dáil in agreeing that Wednesday should be spent elsewhere. Apparently they wish to attend the counting of the votes at the local elections. I thought the members of the Seanad might have the same desire.

I do not think I could vote before I come here.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

That would be a disaster, but I am sure you will survive it. You will be able to attend at the counting. I propose to adjourn the Seanad until Tuesday. There will be no meeting on Wednesday, and we will meet on Thursday for the purpose of dealing with the reception of nominations.

Are you taking into account that Tuesday is the day for the election of the local bodies? It would be impossible for Senators to do their duty and attend here.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Then they have the opportunity of deciding which they will attend. If they prefer to remain for the purpose of recording their votes, that would be patriotic. On the other hand, if they prefer to come here it would be complimentary to the Seanad.
