The Seanad will observe that the report in reference to the conference between the two Houses on the Shop Hours (Drapery Trades, Dublin and Districts) Bill, 1926, is down at the foot of the Agenda, but Senator Brown, who is in charge of it, is further engaged on an important Commission which is sitting and he is anxious, for the convenience of that Commission, that the report be taken now. If there is no objection, I shall now call on Senator Brown.

The members of the House will see from the report of the conference, which is now in their hands, that an agreement has been arrived at unanimously. There were two amendments of the Seanad with which the Dáil refused to agree. One was an amendment by which we altered the time of closing on Saturday nights from 9 o'clock to 7.30, and the other was an amendment to sub-section (1) of Section 6, which made a conviction under the previous Act to be regarded as a conviction under this Act for the purpose of increased punishment. The agreement arrived at is, that on the question of Saturday night closing, which was the main bone of contention, the figure of 7.30, which was the figure in the Bill as it left this House, should be altered to 8.30, 9 o'clock being the hour in the original Bill, and it was agreed that our amendment to sub-section (1) of Section 6 in reference to previous conviction shall stand. In order to carry that out I think it would be necessary to pass two resolutions — one that the Seanad insists on its amendment to sub-section (1) of Section 6, and the other that the Seanad does not insist on its amendment to the Second Schedule, and in lieu thereof to delete the figure 7.30 in line 35 of the Second Schedule, and substitute therefor the figure 8.30. I think these would have to be moved separately. Therefore, I formally move:—
"That the Seanad insists on its amendment to sub-section (1) Section 6."
