Vol. 14 No. 12

Death of Lord Glenavy.

Cathaoirleach

Since we met last week the death has occurred of Lord Glenavy, my immediate predecessor in office and the first Cathaoirleach of the Seanad. His life had been spent in Irish politics opposed to the establishment of an Irish legislature, but at the age of 70, when any man not of exceptional mental calibre and adaptability might well think he had earned his rest, he gave his life a new orientation, completely divorced from his somewhat stormy past, and, as first Chairman of this Assembly, left upon it the impress of his powerful personality in a manner which is fresh in the memory of us all.

I take it to be the wish of this House that I should express to his family our sympathy with them in their bereavement. As an indication of their sympathy, I will ask Senators to rise.

Senators rose in their places.

I must object to this, I am sorry to say. If it were a matter of condolence——

Cathaoirleach

The Senator must not make any speech.

I am not making a speech; I simply say that I do not agree.
