Public Business. - Sittings of the Seanad on Holidays.

I would like to know if it has been agreed that the House will sit to-morrow. I am sure Senators are aware that to-morrow is a very important Church holiday, and the Dáil has set the precedent that no business is transacted on Church holidays. I was very much surprised to hear there was agreement on this. I am aware, Sir, that you made a statement on Wednesday last that this House would sit until 8 o'clock to-night. I did not understand that the House would sit to-morrow. It looks very bad that this House should sit on one of our most important Church holidays. I am sure there is not very much urgency in assisting at our own funeral by attending here to-morrow. If we continue sitting for a week or two I do not think it will make much difference. I think it is a very bad example, and I am disgusted at an agreement to meet on a Church holiday.

On the last occasion on which the House met it agreed specifically to sit on Wednesday, Thursday and, if necessary, on Friday of this week, and the President of the Executive Council was communicated with to that effect. He has written intimating that that would meet with his convenience. I do not think there is anything the House can do now under the circumstances.
