Vol. 24 No. 7

Offences Against the State (Amendment) Bill, 1940. - Order of Business.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

In connection with the order of business for to-day, the Minister for Industry and Commerce has informed me that it would facilitate him if motion No. 4 could be taken after item No. 1 has been concluded. If there is no objection to that course, I presume I can arrange accordingly.

Agreed accordingly.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

The Minister for Finance has also intimated that he will be able to attend this evening on Senator MacDermot's motion, but will be engaged in the Dáil to-morrow. Perhaps I could have an indication from the House as to the taking of the motion to-day.

I should wish to facilitate the Minister.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Could the motion be arranged for about 7 o'clock this evening?

So far as I am concerned, it can.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Has the House anything to say on that matter?

I presume that would mean that, if the other business were not finished, we would resume to-morrow?

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Yes.

Again, as an alternative to carrying it on to-morrow, would there be any objection to leaving the conclusion of the motion until the next time the Seanad would meet for other purposes?

I think Senator MacDermot misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring to other business, and not to Senator MacDermot's motion.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Unfinished business can be adjourned at 7 o'clock this evening and taken up to-morrow, and the two hours between 7 and 9 o'clock this evening can be given for Senator MacDermot's motion.

Actually, I should prefer not to have the motion disposed of in one day.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

The debate need not necessarily be concluded to-day. It can be carried on again to-morrow, if it is not finished.

My reason for saying that is that I feel that this is the sort of thing Senators would wish to think about.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Very good. Then, Senator MacDermot's motion will be taken at 7 o'clock. The first item to be taken to-day is the Unemployment Assistance Bill, 1939.
