On behalf of Senator Quirke I move amendment No. 1:—
To delete in line 3, page 3, the word "provide" and substitute therefor the words "have provided after the 1st day of July, 1940, and before the passing of this Act or provide after the passing of this Act".
This amendment is designed to make effective the purpose which Senator Campbell and Senator Foran had in putting down amendment No. 2, and to give retrospective effect to Sections 4 and 5 in such a way as to cover the case mentioned by them.
I desire to thank the Minister for submitting this amendment to cover the point which Senator Foran and I had in mind when we put down amendment No. 2. I congratulate the Minister on doing so. His action is a valuable recognition of the work of the Charlemont Utility Society to which the amendment refers, whose members receive no pecuniary or material benefit of any kind from their endeavours to provide houses for certain classes of people. I also desire to thank Senator Mrs. Concannon for her co-operation and the Minister for making retrospective the operations of Sections 4 and 5 of the Bill.
