Seanad Éireann díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 9 Aug 1961

Vol. 54 No. 19

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business as on the Order Paper, Nos. 1 to 6 inclusive.

That is a fierce and unrealistic programme.

About eight months ago, I put down a motion in my own name and the names of other Senators:

"That Seanad Éireann is of the opinion that the present method of assessing and revising Poor Law Valuations is causing grave hardship to owners of new, reconstructed and even well maintained premises, and that the law should be amended so that this injustice is not allowed to continue."

I have asked on several occasions that time be given to discuss this very important motion on a matter that very often affects the development of many local projects——

The Senator may not discuss the motion.

——and I have not been able to get any information. I want to know if this motion will be dealt with this session.

Let us first get through the programme of Government business and we shall see what can then be done about the motion.

We have been told to "wait and see" by the Leader of the Government Party on a number of occasions and we do not think it fair either to the Seanad or the people of the country who are concerned. This is making a farce of our proceedings.

Senator Ó Maoláin has no interest in this because it will not fall to be dealt with by this Party.

I want to protest that motion No. 11, on the important topic of farm apprenticeship, has been listed since last November.

The Government are not interested in that.
