Vol. 55 No. 9

Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) (Woven Woollen and Synthetic and Artificial Fabrics) (Amendment) Order, 1962: Motion of Approval.

I move:

That Seanad Éireann hereby approves of:

Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) (Woven Woollen and Synthetic and Artificial Fabrics) (Amendment) Order, 1962.

This is an Order to amend Quota Order No. 13 which is the Order which enforces a quota in respect of woven woollen, synthetic and artificial fabrics. Under the Order, the quantities of these fabrics that may be imported are restricted. There are, of course, provisions whereby supplementary licences are given for bringing in extra quantities, and also a licensing provision whereby fabrics which are not made here may be imported.

A Quota Order, when made, must, under Section 4 (2) of the Control of Imports Act, 1934, be confirmed by a Resolution of both Houses of the Oireachtas within six months of the making of the Order by the Government; similarly with an Order that amends the Quota Order. Such an amending Order must also be endorsed by both Houses. The Order to be confirmed in this case is called the Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) (Woven Woollen and Synthetic and Artificial Fabrics) (Amendment) Order, 1962. The purpose of the amending Order is to bring within the provisions of the quota foam-backed material which appeared to a considerable extent on the Irish market some months ago.

Very full information has already been supplied to Senators in the explanatory memorandum circulated with the Order. If there is any further information that Senators would like, I shall be happy to give it to them.

Question put and agreed to.
