Since our last meeting, Senators will have learned with deep regret of the unexpected death of Senator John D. Sheridan. His sudden passing came as a shock to those of us who saw him in the House two days earlier when he appeared to be in his usual good health. I bhFlaitheas Dé go raibh a anam.
The late Senator was first elected in 1954 from the Nominating Bodies Sub-Panel of the Agricultural Panel and continued to be a member of the House to the time of his death. He was a man of outstanding personality and firm convictions which, when occasion demanded, he had no hesitation in expressing. His courteous and humorous disposition endeared him to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing will be sadly felt by all sections.
Senator Sheridan's interests were chiefly agricultural. His main concern, however, was the cattle industry whose interests he represented in this House. Being a noted pedigree breeder and judge and also a prominent exporter of cattle, his contributions to debates relating to the industry were always listened to with respect. During his long connection with the cattle trade he helped to a great degree in bringing the name of Irish cattle to the forefront. Appreciation of his great work, knowledge and experience is shown by the fact that he was made President of the British Cattle Traders' Association and also Chairman of the Irish Livestock Exporters' and Cattle Traders' Association. He was also Vice-President of the Pedigree Cattle Breeders' Society of Ireland and was a prominent exhibitor at shows all over the country.
