Seanad Éireann díospóireacht -

Vol. 100 No. 2

Business of Seanad.

When is it proposed that the House sit again?

It is proposed to adjourn until Wednesday, 23 March 1983.

We had a contretemps here about a fortnight ago as to whether we would sit last week or this week. There were various people very concerned that we did not sit last week and they expected that there would be enough business for last week and this week. It was suggested that we sit today, we would be sitting tomorrow and that there would be business ordered for tomorrow. Is there a particular reason why there is not business ordered for tomorrow, because judging by the amount of verbiage that was coming from certain people who are not in the House at present, it would appear as if they wanted the House to sit two days this week and that there would be plenty of business?

All I can say is that I urged on the House on the last occasion the policy of taking matters steadily and working at a steady pace. For the amount of business coming to us from the other House, to meet once a fortnight is the appropriate rhythm. We have facilitated the Opposition by taking a Private Members' motion when we met today and I hope to facilitate the Government side in a similar fashion when we meet on this day fortnight.

We are not agreeing to meet every fortnight. We are agreeing to meet this day fortnight and then to work from there.

Cos ar chois.

The Seanad adjourned at 8.05 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 23 March 1983.
