Vol. 127 No. 8

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Paddy McGowan that on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to remove the anomaly that exists in the provision of scholarships and maintenance grants for second and third level students residing in the South of Ireland and attending college and taking A levels in the North of Ireland.

I also received notice from Senator David Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to review the case of a prisoner in Arbour Hill (name supplied) with a view to exercising his ministerial prerogative of commuting the sentence in the light of its comparative severity taking into account the circumstances of the case.

Tá fógra agam ón Seanadóir Pól Ó Foighil:

Le fiafraigh d'Aire na Mara cén polasaí atá ag an Roinn i leith forbairt tionscail Sliog Éisc i gConamara go ginearálta agus i gCill Cearáin go speisialta.

I also received notice from Senator Dan Kiely of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to make funds available for the repairs to the coastline in County Kerry damaged in recent storms.

I also received notice from Senator Tom Raftery of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to enforce the hormone ban and to intercept the supply of such illegal substances in order to protect the good reputation of our beef.

I also received notice from Senator Avril Doyle of the following matter:

The urgent need for a paediatric unit at Wexford General Hospital.

I also received notice from Senator Éamon Ó Cuív of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Industry and Commerce to outline his plans for the location of further industry in Galway city and its environs to provide employment for the large number of school and college leavers each year in the area.

I also received notice from Senator Mary Jackman of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Social Welfare to allocate part of the £500,000 provided in the 1991 budget for Women's Aid to the women's refuges, particularly Adapt House in Limerick city.

I regard the matters raised by Senators McGowan, Norris, Ó Foighil, Kiely, Raftery, Doyle and Jackman as suitable for discussion on the Ajournment. I have selected Senator McGowan's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Norris, Ó Foighil, Kiely, Raftery, Doyle and Jackman may give notice another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule the matter raised by Senator Ó Cuív is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility.
