Vol. 139 No. 4

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Maloney that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to extend the urban renewal scheme in the town of Letterkenny, County Donegal and to introduce the scheme in Buncrana, County Donegal.

I have also received notice from Senator Ross of the following:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to take urgent action to save Ireland's rapidly depleting stock of wild salmon and sea trout.

I have also received notice from Senator Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to provide specific funding to remove the very dangerous sections of roadway on the national secondary road, between Castlebar and Ballinrobe, County Mayo.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Maloney and Ross as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I ask Members to note what I now have to say. I regret that the matter raised by Senator Burke is out of order as the funding of national primary and national secondary roads is now a matter for the National Roads Authority, as was confirmed by the Minister in the House last night.

I am aware that the state of national primary and national secondary roads has been one of the matters raised most frequently on the Adjournment and up to now it was in order for discussion as far as I was concerned. I am bringing to the attention of Members that the Minister for the Environment in his reply last evening to Senator Daly clearly stated that the allocation of funding for national primary and national secondary roads is a matter for the new roads authority. I emphasis this to avoid any ambiguity about where responsibility lies.

Can we bring in their manager?

I trust the position is clear.

I thought Pádraig Flynn tarred all those roads before he left for Europe.
