I move: "That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the law relating to the trial of certain sexual offences and to provide for related matters."
Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill, 1995: First Stage.
Is the Bill opposed?
I thank the Leader on behalf of the Progressive Democrats and on behalf of Senator Norris, whom I must not forget, for accepting this legislation. It is very important and, as Mr. Justice Carney said, it is incumbent on the Oireachtas to deal with the consequences arising from the case. Perhaps the Acting Leader will have a positive influence on the Leader on his return. She set a very good standard in his absence by accepting legislation from this side of the House.
When is it proposed to take Second Stage?
With agreement and discussion it is proposed to take it on Thursday, 2 March 1995.
For the benefit of the House I remind Senators that the House must fix a date for the taking of Second Stage. However, the fixing of the date does not bind the House to taking the Bill on that particular day. It would be for the House to decide on the Order of Business on whatever day it arises.
