Vol. 148 No. 16

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Calnan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to deal with problems created by groups of people in caravans who move into small towns and villages in west Cork intimidating and threatening local and business people, and also by a large number of new age travellers whose behaviour in many cases is not acceptable especially in public places.

I have also received notice from Senator R. Kiely of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry to expedite the special beef premium payments to extend BSE compensation to include cattle slaughtered from 1 January 1996; and to explore various systems to ease farmers' financial difficulties.

I have also received notice from Senator Finneran of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to provide the necessary funds to alleviate the serious overcrowding at the County Hospital Roscommon.

I have also received notice from Senator Farrelly of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Education if funding will be made available this year to ensure that the extension to Ashbourne community school can go ahead.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Sullivan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to ensure adequate funding for health boards to maintain and develop the home help service.

I have also received notice from Senator Hayes of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to include in the intergovernmental conference discussions a complete and meaningful section concerning the rights of young people in the European Union, and that such a commitment be included in the next Treaty of the European Union which is under discussion.

I regard the matters raised by Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Calnan's and Senator Kiely's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
