Vol. 160 No. 1

Request to move Adjournment of Seanad under Standing Order 29.

Before I call the next Senator, I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 29 from Senator Ridge. I call on Senator Ridge to state the matter of which she has given notice.

I seek the Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29 to debate the following urgent matter of public interest: a statement by the Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform with responsibility for people with disabilities on the outcome of her discussions on the emergency funding required by the Centre for Independent Living to allow for the Vantastic system of minibus travel to become functional again.

I acknowledge that the Minister is anxious for this matter to be resolved and I raise it because I had to approach four Departments for an answer which was still not forthcoming. There is not a lack of will to see this matter resolved but we are prevented by bureaucratic mechanisms. For that reason I ask that the matter be considered.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Ridge. I cannot consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 29. I regret, therefore, that I must rule it out of order. I understand that the Senator has submitted a motion on the Adjournment on the same subject. I assure her that I will give that matter favourable consideration for the Adjournment.

I am disappointed but I acknowledge the duty of the Cathaoirleach in the matter and will be happy to have the motion taken on the Adjournment tomorrow.
