Vol. 184 No. 20

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Finucane that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to outline the number of houses under council ownership and the number of private houses that will have improvement works carried out in Glenma housing estate, Croom, County Limerick, which was approved in principle on 14 May 2002, when construction will commence and the timeframe for completion of this project.

I have also received notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to make special provision under statutory instrument 312 of 1997 or some analogous mechanism to provide for the inclusion of more than 700 graduates of TCD in the electoral register for Dublin University, who were accidentally excluded as a result of human error, in time for the next election.

I have also received notice from Senator Kitt of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Education and Science if she is aware of the decision of the Sisters of Mercy, western province, to withdraw as providers of education in the Kinvara area and to close Seamount College, Kinvara, County Galway; if her permission is required to disband the college board of management and the efforts she can make to allow this thriving school to continue.

I have also received notice from Senator Browne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to clarify if she plans to change the current practice where primary school teachers give up five days of their summer holidays to get back three personal leave days; and if she plans to allow paid substitute cover for those days.

I have also received notice from Senator McHugh of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to update the board of management at Glenswilly national school, Newmills, Letterkenny, County Donegal, regarding the plans for a school extension.

I have also received notice from Senator John Paul Phelan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to outline the reasons for her failure to give a devolved grant for a building extension to Scoil Náisúnta na Maigheine Muire, Ardattin, County Carlow in either 2004 or 2005 and to outline the current position regarding the necessary funds for this extension.

I have also received notice from Senator Bannon of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to clarify the position regarding the inequity of charging fees of more than €6,000 for a student (details supplied) repeating a college year, with the allied loss of third level grant provision, in circumstances where she is relying for funding on a widowed parent, whose sole income is disability benefit and to outline how, under natural justice, such a punitive measure can be enforced.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Meara of the following matter:

The need for the Minister of Health and Children to ensure that vacancies for orthopaedic consultants in the mid-west area are filled as soon as possible as this failure is resulting in intolerably long waiting lists for Croom Hospital, particularly patients in the north Tipperary area.

I have also received notice from Senator Ulick Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to intervene and indicate her intentions regarding provision of second level education at Seamount College, Kinvara, County Galway, following the announcement by the Sisters of Mercy of closure of the school.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Finucane, Norris and Kitt and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Browne, McHugh, Phelan, Bannon, O'Meara and Burke may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
