SELECT COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATIONS, MARINE AND NATURAL RESOURCES díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 30 Nov 2005

Expressions of Sympathy.

I take the opportunity to express my sympathy and that of the Department to the relatives and friends of Jimmy Myler who lost his life following the sinking of the ill-fated Rising Sun. I hope the skipper, Pat Colfer, who is missing, may return. I wish Ian Tierney, the survivor, well. This is one tragedy too many.

For those engaged in fishing, it is a dangerous and risky business. Our sympathies are with those who must go out in boats at times such as this. It must be deeply tragic for the families involved. All of us on this side of the House extend our sympathies.

I fully concur with those statements. It is an extraordinarily difficult time and I sympathise with all concerned.

I agree with those statements. That it is such a risky and dangerous lifestyle must inform all the comments we make about fishing and the way forward. I echo the Minister of State's comments.

I wish to be associated with the comments and express my sympathies to the families.

I thank the Minister of State and his officials for coming to the committee and look forward to engaging with them again in the near future.

The select committee adjourned at 4.20 p.m. sine die.
