Special Committee Wildlife Bill, 1975 díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 20 Oct 1976

SECTION 50.

Question proposed: "That section 50 stand part of the Bill."

This is the final section in the "wildlife dealing" group. Its purpose is to keep the public, especially hoteliers, restaurateurs, and so on, and game shooters informed of bona fide wildlife dealers. It is a logical sequitur to sections 45 to 49 and reflects a similar provision in the Game Preservation Act, 1930, relating to game dealers’ licences.

Subsection (1) enables the Minister to publish a list of licence holders periodically in whatever manner he thinks fit. For this purpose the Minister could use, say, Iris Oifigiúil, newspapers, suitable journals, periodicals and so on.

Subsection (2) enables the Minister to take similar steps in relation to licences which have been revoked by the court—following appeal, if any. This is really a section which enables the Minister to give information regarding wildlife dealing to the public and particularly to hoteliers, restaurateurs and so forth.

The Minister mentioned "Iris Oifigiúil, newspapers or suitable journals”. I assume local newspapers would not be overlooked. There is a greater likelihood the information would be seen in local newspapers than in Iris Oifigiúil.

Newspapers would include the provincial press.

Question put and agreed to.
