125 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his views on the decline in water quality on the southern end of Lough Allen; if his Department proposes to carry out a survey; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11116/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraMy colleague, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has primary responsibility for policy and legislation regarding water quality issues. Statutory responsibility for water management and protection rests primarily with the local authorities. Regional fisheries boards, as part of their fisheries management function, are also in a position to take prosecutions for water pollution offences. The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board advises me that it has been made aware of a deterioration in water quality in Lough Allen by Leitrim County Council. The board, in consultation with the county council, is presently monitoring water quality on the lake in order to identify the source of the problem.
