Ceist:

22 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress of the inquiry being held into the death of a person (details supplied) two weeks after undergoing an appendix operation at Cavan General Hospital and who subsequently went back to the casualty department suffering from stomach pains, but was sent home; when he expects to receive the final report; when the committee appointed to inquire into complaints made against two consultants at the hospital will report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Following the tragic death of the child concerned, the North Eastern Health Board established an expert group to undertake an urgent review of all factors involved. My Department is advised that the work of this group is ongoing and a report will issue to the North Eastern Health Board as soon as possible.

As the establishment of the committee of inquiry set up to examine matters of complaint against two consultants in Cavan General Hospital is the subject of judicial review proceedings before the High Court, the matter is sub judice. I am not, therefore, in a position to comment on the matter.
