Ceisteanna (114)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Ceist:

114 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs further to Question No. 146 of 31 March 2004, if the Government took no steps to investigate whether the permanent mission of Ireland to the United Nations was bugged, or the Irish representatives put under any form of surveillance, during the time Ireland held a seat on the Security Council. As stated in my reply to the previous question referred to by the Deputy, I am very conscious of the importance of maintaining adequate security arrangements in respect of communication facilities in all the offices of my Department. However, for security reasons, it would not be appropriate to state what measures are taken in this regard in any particular mission. I would like to state again, however, that there is no evidence to suggest that our UN office was bugged during the time when Ireland held a seat on the Security Council, or at any other time
