399 Mr. O’Connor asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the debate in the UK regarding the reduction of the voting age to 16; his views on the subject; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14328/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraI am aware of the debate in the UK on this matter and of the conclusions of the UK Electoral Commission in its report entitled Age of Electoral Majority that there appears to be insufficient justification for a change to the voting age at present. This was against the background that almost all countries currently have a minimum voting age of 18. There is no proposal at present to reduce the voting age in Ireland.
