361 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the reason non-nationals outside the EU who are registered on the register of electors can vote in local elections; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16255/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraUnder section 24 of the Local Government Act 2001, every person whose name is on the register of local government electors for a local electoral area is entitled to vote at a local election poll in that area. A person, irrespective of nationality, is entitled to be registered as a local government elector if he or she has reached the age of 18 years and is ordinarily resident in the local government area.
