153 Mr. O’Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science when the expected circular letter regarding the employment of special needs assistants will issue; the issues it will address; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18456/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraSpecial needs assistants may be approved to support a pupil who has a significant medical need for such assistance, a significant impairment of physical or sensory function or where his or her behaviour means he or she constitutes a danger to himself or herself or other pupils. The criteria and procedures relating to the allocation of special needs assistant support are outlined in my Department's circular 07/02. This circular may be accessed on my Department's website under the heading "Children with Special Needs". The detailed arrangements for processing applications for special education resources, including those for special needs assistants, will be set out in an interim circular to be issued to all schools in the coming week.
