411 Mr. O’Dowd asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the progress which has been made during Ireland’s EU Presidency in regard to having Irish recognised as an official EU language; if he expects that Irish will be recognised as an official EU language within the lifetime of the Government, in view of the fact that it is a commitment in the programme for Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 411 and 412 together.

I refer the Deputies to the reply given to Priority Question No. 1 on 3 June 2004. As indicated in that reply, the working group set up by Government to examine this issue has now reported. The report is being examined by relevant Ministers and I expect the issue will be brought formally to Government in the near future.
