Ceisteanna (267)

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

317 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Transport if, in the context of the recent reply to a parliamentary question seeking the re-opening of Killucan station, County Westmeath, and the accepted need for this development, he would help to part fund an independent feasibility study on a euro for euro basis with the local community council which would examine the need and possible usage of such a service in the catchment area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The statutory responsibility for the provision of railway services rests with Iarnród Éireann. As I have stated in previous responses to similar questions about Killucan, the company is involved in discussions with the local authorities in the area to establish whether a suitable catchment area for any proposed station can be established. This is normal practice in circumstances such as these. The provision of funding for any necessary studies is a matter for Irish Rail or in conjunction with the local authority.
