120 Ms Lynch asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the number of persons currently identified as having being exposed to the hepatitis C virus as a result of receiving contaminated anti-D products provided by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service; the cumulative investment in hepatology centres established to provide medical services to such cases; and the total amount of compensation paid to date as a consequence of the contamination tragedy. Amharc ar fhreagraIt is estimated that around 16,000 people have been exposed to hepatitis C as a result of receiving potentially contaminated anti D products. The estimated cumulative cost of the provision of health care services in the designated hepatology centres for persons infected with hepatitis C from blood and blood products administered within the State to date is €61.5 million. The total cost of the hepatitis C and HIV compensation tribunal to December 2003 — including awards of the tribunal and of the High Court on appeal, reparation fund, legal fees and administration — is approximately €545 million.
