229 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science if her attention has been drawn to the number of qualified primary school teachers unable to obtain employment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [33615/04]
Amharc ar fhreagraSignificant numbers of additional teaching posts have been created at primary level in recent years. The recruitment and appointment of teachers to fill vacancies in an individual school is a matter for the board of management of the school concerned. Boards of management must make every effort, including advertising in a national newspaper, to obtain the services of a qualified teacher for appointment to a temporary or permanent post. Unqualified teachers should only be employed in exceptional circumstances and when all avenues for recruiting qualified personnel have been exhausted.
