79 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his views on the introduction of a students summer jobs scheme for local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22314/05]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe employment of staff is a matter for each local authority. It is open to the authorities to provide short-term summer employment for students. Such employment could meet relevant requirements of the local government sector, as well as offering work experience of benefit to the students concerned. The cost of any such summer employment would be met from the authorities' own resources and from other income received, including general purpose grants from the local government fund.
