289 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when he will respond to the formal notice from the European Commission regarding Ireland’s alleged breaches of the habitats directive by permitting the continuation of drift net fishing for salmon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has primary responsibility for the implementation in Ireland of Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna. As the complaint concerns drift net fishing in Irish waters, the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources is continuing to work very closely with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government on the drafting of a reply to the European Commission's preliminary complaint against Ireland. The reply is required to be submitted by 13 November 2005.
