Dáil Éireann Debate, Wednesday - 12 October 2005

Wednesday, 12 October 2005

Ceisteanna (299, 300)

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

372 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to increase Garda numbers in Ballybofey and Stranorlar, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28246/05]

The Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, inform me that the twin towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar are policed by gardaí attached to Ballybofey Garda station, Donegal division. The personnel strength of Ballybofey Garda station is currently 19, of all ranks.

Garda personnel assigned throughout the country, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, are constantly monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and that the best possible service is provided to the public.

With regard to Garda resources generally, the accelerated recruitment campaign of 1,100 Garda recruits each year to reach a record force strength of 14,000, in line with the commitment in the agreed programme for Government, is fully on target. This will lead to a combined strength, of both attested gardaí and recruits in training, of 14,000 by the end of 2006.

The Garda Commissioner will now draw up plans on how best to distribute and manage these additional resources and, in this context, the needs of the Donegal division will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda divisions throughout the country.

Bernard J. Durkan

For security and operational reasons it is not Garda policy to disclose the number of personnel working in any particular place at any specific time.

Garda personnel assigned throughout the country, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, are constantly monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and that the best possible service is provided to the public.

With regard to Garda resources generally, the accelerated recruitment campaign of 1,100 Garda recruits each year to reach a record force strength of 14,000, in line with the commitment in An Agreed programme for Government, is fully on target. This will lead to a combined strength, of both attested gardaí and recruits in training, of 14,000 by the end of 2006.

The Garda Commissioner will now draw up plans on how best to distribute and manage these additional resources and, in this context, the needs of the Carlow-Kildare division will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda divisions throughout the country.
