Ceisteanna (497)

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

577 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Transport his views on the suggestion made by a person (details supplied) that he introduce legislation to allow for the painting of lines on the outside of the outside lane on dual carriageways and motorways to signify the breaking distance in dry weather to a car in front at the relevant speed limit so that motorists have a visual reference point for breaking distances and as an effort to curtail tailgating; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is the responsibility of all motorists in all circumstances and on all road types, including dual carriageways and motorways, to drive in a manner that does not give rise to danger to themselves or other road users. That responsibility relates in particular to the speed at which vehicles are driven, even where the speed is less than the prevailing speed limit.

The proposal presented in association with the Deputy's question will be considered by my Department in the context of the review of the traffic signs manual, acting on the advice of the National Roads Authority and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
