Ceisteanna (269)

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

318 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Transport his views on recent media reports that he has sanctioned that responsibility for the delivery of integrated ticketing should pass to the proposed Dublin Transport Authority and in the interim to the person charged with setting out the remit of such an authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In March 2002, the Railway Procurement Agency, RPA, was given statutory responsibility for the delivery of a multi-operator system of integrated public transport ticketing using smart card technology, with initial deployment in the Dublin area. That remains the position and the RPA is progressing the project.

I have established a team, chaired by Professor Margaret O'Mahony, which is charged with finalising a structure for the proposed Dublin Transport Authority, DTA, detailing its remit and responsibilities as well as identifying the human resources which are critical to the success of the body taking into account best practice and best experience internationally. I will await the report of the team before deciding the functions that will be conferred on the authority.
