416 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding the Government’s plans in respect of the adoption of the Schengen acquis, the Governments intentions in this regard; the consequences of such decisions for the State; and if it is the Government’s intention to ensure that a decision is preceded by debate in the Houses of the Oireachtas. Amharc ar fhreagraIreland has successfully applied to operate elements of the Schengen arrangements that are not concerned with the abolition of border controls. Before Ireland can become a party to the relevant portions of the Schengen acquis, it will be necessary for us to put in place an extensive set of legal and technical measures. This task is being co-ordinated by my Department and will be completed as quickly as possible.
I understand that Ireland's Schengen participation will require the approval of both Houses of the Oireachtas. Accordingly, a motion seeking such approval will be introduced in Dáil and Seanad Éireann in due course.
