167 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment his response to the resolution of the European Parliament of 15 January 2004 on the implementation of the posting of workers directive in connection with the provision of services; if he agrees with the views of the European Parliament; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraI note the resolution of the European Parliament of 15 January 2004 on the implementation of the posting of workers directive. The resolution makes a number of proposals which are, in the main, matters for the European Commission, under its right of initiative, to address in the first instance.
Posted workers are workers who are sent to another country on a temporary basis by an employer. While Ireland has not had any complaints in respect of persons sent here temporarily by their employers, should the European Commission come forward with any concrete proposals in the area, such as an amending directive, for consideration by the Council of Ministers, Ireland will play a constructive role. Our aim will be to ensure that any agreement reached will be of practical benefit to posted workers throughout the European Union.
