166 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the progress on the review of the use of Irish in Gaeltacht areas; the outcome of this review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4381/06]
Amharc ar fhreagraI assume that the Deputy is referring to the sociolinguistic study of the Gaeltacht, which commenced in April 2004 and is scheduled for completion this coming September. This important study — which is being conducted on behalf of my Department by Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, National University of Ireland, Galway, in conjunction with the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis, National University of Ireland, Maynooth — is examining Irish language usage in the Gaeltacht as a basis for strengthening the linguistic development of the Gaeltacht as an Irish-speaking area, and a review of the official Gaeltacht boundaries.
As I have already outlined to the House, all of the findings and proposals emerging from the study will receive careful and considered examination by my Department. Any proposals that may emerge on foot of that examination will be put before Government in due course.
