324 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Transport the number of haulage drivers prosecuted for breaking road safety and road haulage regulations in 2004 and 2005; the breakdown of such offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8008/06]
Amharc ar fhreagraTransport officers from the Department of Transport are responsible for enforcing drivers' hours and licensing rules governing road haulage operators. These rules are also enforced by the Garda. Both haulage operators and drivers are liable to prosecution where breaches of drivers' hours rules are detected. However, in the case of breaches of the operator licensing rules it is only the operator that is liable to prosecution.
The following table sets out the number of drivers and operators prosecuted for drivers' hours and haulage offences in 2004 and 2005.
