Ceisteanna (547)

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

576 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government when persons who were compelled to give up their turbary under the EU directive which focused on the presentation of high or raised bogs and the implementation of NHA and SAC by Dúchas will be awarded their compensation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Compensation through the purchase by agreement of the turbary rights or of the full title of the designated bogs has now been paid in almost 400 cases. The procedure involves the preparation of a contract for sale by the vendor's solicitor and the processing of that contract, including, inter alia, proof of legal title, through the Chief State Solicitor’s office. Subject to that sometimes time-consuming procedure, my Department will seek to advance purchases from, and payments to, landowners as quickly as possible regarding both current and future land acquisitions.
