44 Mr. Kenny asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children her views following comments made by a person (details supplied) that it could be calculated that between 350 and 500 lives are lost each year due to the lack of such units; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Amharc ar fhreagraOrganised care of stroke patients within a single unit has been shown to reduce mortality and disability. I understand that a Stroke Unit was established in June 2002 in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin and that the Health Service Executive is supporting the development of stroke care in a number of other acute hospitals.
In addition, a national audit of stroke services commenced in March 2006. This is an Irish Heart Foundation initiative in association with my Department. The entire study is scheduled to take 18 months to complete. The result of this audit will inform future policy and strategy for the development of services for patients with stroke in Ireland.
46 Mr. Kehoe asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the number of elective procedures cancelled at Waterford Regional Hospital in 2005; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21256/06]

Accordingly, my Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to have a reply issued directly to the Deputy.
48 Mr. Hogan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the number of ENT procedures cancelled at Waterford Regional Hospital in the past 12 months due to the fact that accident and emergency patients were occupying these beds when ENT patients had their procedures cancelled; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
