211 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of motor accidents, involving the Gardaí, which are currently being dealt with by the State Claims Agency; the numbers which were dealt with by the Agency in 2004 and 2005 respectively; the number of these which are being investigated which involved members of the Force driving under the permission of the Garda Commission in 2004, 2005 and to date in 2006 respectively; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Personal injury claims arising from road traffic accidents involving Garda vehicles were formerly managed by the Garda authorities. In December, 2001, the State Claims Agency took over the management of the claims.

The number of active claims for An Garda Síochána arising from road traffic accidents which are currently being dealt with by the Agency is 494.

All official road traffic accidents are investigated by An Garda Síochána. The total number of Garda Síochána road traffic accident claims, including those involving members driving with the Chief Superintendent's permission, for the period 2004-2006 is reflected in the following table.
