Ceisteanna (52)

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

33 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if, with regard to section 23 of the Local Government Act 2001, and in view of recent Central Statistics Office statistics, it will be necessary to redraw local electoral area boundaries and examine the number of councillors in each local authority before the 2009 local elections. The current local electoral areas and the number of members of each county council assigned to each such area derive from the Electoral Area Boundary Committee Reports of 1998. The 2004 local elections took place on the basis of the existing local electoral areas. The next local elections are due to take place in 2009. Consideration can be given to reviewing local electoral areas in light of the final 2006 Census results when they become available and other relevant factors. There are no proposals at this time to alter the number of councillors in each local authority.
