148 Deputy Michael Kennedy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the practice of re-registering written-off UK cars here and a report (details supplied); the action being taken to curb this practice; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5146/08]
Amharc ar fhreagraI am aware of the potential for vehicles written off in the UK to be presented for registration in the State. When a foreign vehicle is presented for registration, Revenue officials satisfy themselves that it is a mechanically propelled vehicle as provided for in the legislation, however Revenue has no role under legislation in determining the roadworthiness of such vehicles. The Deputy may be aware that a working group led by the Road Safety Authority is studying this issue at present.
