Ceisteanna (64)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Ceist:

86 Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the fact that certain local authorities have developed a separate interview system for the allocation of Part V housing to the routine social housing allocations; and the impact that this may have in developing socially cohesive communities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The allocation of social housing is undertaken by a local authority under its scheme of letting priorities, the making of which is a reserved function of the authority under section 11 of the Housing Act 1988. Guidance issued by my Department in respect of the making of these schemes made it clear to local authorities that the primary objective of their schemes should be to promote equality of opportunity in gaining access to housing support. The application of allocation policy is a matter for each local authority.
