The Official Languages Act, 2003 was signed into law on 14th July 2003. Section 9(1) of the Act refers to the duty on public bodies to ensure that either Irish or Irish and English languages are used on oral advertisements, on stationery, on signage and on advertisements. However while Section 9(1) of the 2003 Act has not yet been signed into law, in the context of my Department's role in the promotion of Irish, my Department has, where appropriate, been placing advertisements in Irish and English or Irish only.
Prior to 2006 a breakdown of advertising placed in the Irish Language is not readily available in my Department. The amount spent on advertising, in the Irish language, placed by my Department in each of the years since 2006 was as follows;
