272 Deputy Joe Costello asked the Minister for Finance the number of licences issued to bookmakers in each of the past ten years; the criteria governing the issuing of such licences; the tax to date from bookmakers in each of the past ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the number of licences issued to bookmakers and the betting tax paid by bookmakers in each of the past 10 years for which figures are currently available is set out in the following table:

To obtain a bookmaker's licence a person must first obtain a Certificate of Personal Fitness from the Superintendent of An Garda Síochána for the area in which the person resides.

A person who has obtained a Certificate of Personal Fitness must make application, within 21 days of the issue of the certificate, to the Revenue Commissioners under Section 7 of the Betting Acts, 1931 and 1994. The application must be accompanied by:

The relevant Certificate of Personal Fitness.

A tax clearance certificate issued under Section 242 of the Finance Act 1992 as amended.

A remittance of the appropriate licence fee, currently €250.

A photograph of the applicant.
