272 Deputy Joe Costello asked the Minister for Finance the number of licences issued to bookmakers in each of the past ten years; the criteria governing the issuing of such licences; the tax to date from bookmakers in each of the past ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. To obtain a bookmaker's licence a person must first obtain a Certificate of Personal Fitness from the Superintendent of An Garda Síochána for the area in which the person resides.
A person who has obtained a Certificate of Personal Fitness must make application, within 21 days of the issue of the certificate, to the Revenue Commissioners under Section 7 of the Betting Acts, 1931 and 1994. The application must be accompanied by:
The relevant Certificate of Personal Fitness.
A tax clearance certificate issued under Section 242 of the Finance Act 1992 as amended.
A remittance of the appropriate licence fee, currently €250.
A photograph of the applicant.
